Barista Line: Perfecting the Craft of Coffee
Metallurgica Motta specializes in providing top-notch coffee tools for both professional and home baristas. The Barista Line includes essential items such as espresso tampers, frothing pitchers, leveling tools, knock boxes, and tools for latte or cappuccino art.
Why Choose a Motta Tamper?
Ergonomic Handle: The wooden handle of Motta's tamper is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the average hand, allowing users to employ their index finger and thumb to apply pressure, rather than relying solely on the handle.
Stainless Steel Base: The 18/10 stainless steel base of the tamper is heavy-duty, providing the perfect weight for pressing down on espresso grounds.
Design-Driven: Motta's wide range of products is designed to add beauty and style to any home or kitchen.
Choosing the Right Size Tamper: When selecting the appropriate tamper size, the rule of thumb is to measure the inner diameter of your portafilter and subtract 1 mm.
How to Use Your Tamper
- Measure the perfect amount of ground coffee (¼ ounce for a single, ½ ounce for a double) and place it in the portafilter.
- Tap the sides of the portafilter to evenly distribute the coffee, or use a coffee leveling tool to create a flat bed for tamping.
- Place the portafilter on a flat surface with a tamping mat or stand.
- Position the tamper evenly in the portafilter. This step is crucial, as an uneven tamp will result in an uneven extraction.
- Press down evenly with the tamper, applying approximately 30 pounds of pressure. To get a feel for this, use the tamper to press on a bathroom or kitchen scale until you reach 30 pounds.
- If desired, you may lightly spin the tamper to polish the tamp, but this is a matter of style, not a necessity.
- Wipe away any ground coffee that has fallen on the portafilter and basket rim.
- You are now ready to place the portafilter in your machine and brew the perfect shot of espresso.
Precautions
To ensure the best results, always make sure to clean your tamper after each use by giving it a quick brush or washing it under warm water. Never place your tamper in the dishwasher, as this can damage the handle. The tamper's ash wood handle is known for its durability, and the 51 mm flat base is made of high-quality 18/10 stainless steel, manufactured in Italy.
